The 709 Derby Girls season is quickly coming to an end, so it seems like the perfect time to reflect on what’s happened in the past few months.
The biggest achievement of course, was our 2nd official bout at The Glacier in Mount Pearl. The Neversweets and Vaders Vixen’s battled it out in a nail biting match. In the end, Vaders Vixen’s came out the victor. Once again we give praise and thanks to all of our volunteers, refs, coaches and the fans. Simply stated – our fans are amazing.
As well, in August the derby girls teamed up with the delicious Burly Q Babies for a tag teamed burlesque show. A jam packed Rockhouse was hopping as derby girls and burlesque girls – shimmied and teased their way across the stage. Everyone was covered in glitter, sequence and feathers and everyone had an amazing night. Thank you to all the people who helped organize the event and extra thanks to Miss Jezebel – who was our amazing special guest.
Now before we close the 2011 season we have two final events. First up is an exciting night of recruitment. If you wanna be a derby girl, join us on Oct 26 for try-outs. Read more here. Also – the 709 Derby Girls are helping out the community this Halloween by collecting food for the local food bank. Help out the community by taking part in Trick or Eat. Check out this events Facebook page.
So as we hang up our skates after another amazing season lets take a moment to look back at 2011. We had our first bout, we had our first set of away matches in Moncton and we all received a million bruises. It’s been tough work and we’ve all received some brutal hits. But I think we can all agree that roller derby in Newfoundland and Labrador isn’t going anywhere. We look forward to new matches, new bruises and new amazing girls joining the league.
So lets take a glass of champagne/wine/gin/beer and give a big cheers to the 2011 derby season.
We did it girls. And we’ll fucking do it again.

This recruiting session will be for our upcoming 2012 season which will start at the end of February!
Wednesday, October 26 · 8:00pm – 10:00pm
Training will start at 8:00pm at Virginia Park Elementary School. If you have not been there it is located at 14 Middleton St and you have to go all the way to the back to find the gym doors. We’ll have a sign on the door so you know you’re at the right place! The first few minutes will be registration where you will fill out some paperwork. There will be a waiver that is mandatory for you to sign or you wont be able to skate. Also a little questionnaire about your skating experience, what team you would like to be on if you had the choice, etc. Once that’s all taken care of, then we skate!
Make sure you come prepared. You’ll need to have:
- photo id
- helmet
- mouth guard
- knee pads
- knee pad covers (hockey socks or anything that will cover up the front part of your knee pads)
- elbow pads
- wrist guards
- quad skates or rollerblades
- water!
If you are missing anything on this list you may not be able to skate. Double check before you come because we don’t want to turn anyone away.
For the training session we will be teaching you the basic skating skills. You will learn how to balance, fall correctly, how to stop, how to skate in a pack and turning. There will be two coaches leading the training session and the other derby girls will be there helping you along and giving pointers.
We are not looking for the best skaters, we will be looking for how you take advice, how quickly you can learn and most importantly positive attitudes. We want dedicated girls who have as much passion for the sport as we do! If you have any more questions please email 709derbygirls@gmail.com. See you soon!
